Unequal opening
During vase life evaluation of mixed bouquets the individualflowers are not necessarily in the same maturity stage. Gerbera,Dianthus (carnation) or Chrysanthemum are already open, while others like Eustoma, Iris or Rosa are still in an immaturestage. What is the reason behind this unequal opening?
Which factors influence the flower development from bud to fully open flowers?
-
Harvest stage
Flowers, such as Chrysanthemum, Dianthus (carnation) andGerbera are harvested already in an open stage. So whenpresent in a mixed bouquet, they are the most developed flowers.
-
Need for food
Some flowers, such as Rosa and Eustoma, react positively when flower food is used, because of their ‘immature’ stage and as such need a lot of food to develop to a full flowering stage.
-
Micro-organisms pollution
Vase water without any flower food will quickly be pollutedwith micro-organisms, such as bacteria, fungi and yeast. Some flowers, such as Rosa, Gerbera and a lot of summerflowers are very sensitive for these organisms. When thisoccurs, flower development will be reduced or totally cease.Other flowers, for example spray carnations are less sensitiveto pollution and if these are mixed within a mixed bouquetthey will develop better compared to Rosa.
