Flower life-span
Once flowers are cut/harvested they are deprived of water, food and growth regulators naturally supplied by the mother plant. In order for the flowers to develop in a natural way, we have to continue to supply the flowers these ingredients dissolved in water every time the flowers are hydrated at the grower, wholesaler, retailer or in the vase at the consumer. Cut flower foods contain all the necessary ingredients for the natural development of stems, leaves and flower petals, as well as for size, colour and scent.
The graph below shows the flower development of an intact plant, which means the stem is still on the plant, not cut! This natural, flower specific development is the so-called ‘genetic potential of the flower’. This development in time is the reference for all flowers post-harvest research. These ‘vase life studies’in conditioned test rooms are mimicking the consumers’ home. In Chrysal’s product development we aim to mimic this natural flower development. None of the Chrysal products contain ingredients for or are aimed at genetic modification.
